本書繼彭慕蘭分岔論與黃宗智內卷論與之爭以后，進一步探討18世紀末和19世紀初的清朝中國經濟發展道路，與西方國家相比較是獨特的還是相似
的問題，書中對現有的歷史GDP研究和“大分流”研究進行批判，強調利用**手史料進行研究的重要性，不僅能進一步厘清我國經濟史發展脈絡，而且能正面回應西方的“歐洲中心論”研究理路提出的“中國因與西方‘分流’而走向衰敗落后”的觀點，有益于樹立文化自覺和文化自信。書中認為帝國晚期的中國是相當特殊的國家，有著很強的傳統和獨特的文化傳承，但這種“獨特”并沒有強烈到讓中國可以違背普適的政治經濟規律。清代中國仍然是一個非常“相似”的國家，仍然遵循著“普遍農業國家”的發展道路。這種發展道路，一些西方國家早已完成，一些國家則直到現在還在完成過程之中。
本書語言流暢，觀點鮮明，具有較高的學術價值，且用英文寫作，可以與國內外廣大學者展開探討，有利于推進相關研究領域的發展。

倪玉平，1975年生，歷史學博士、經濟學博士后。曾任哈佛燕京訪問學者、格羅寧根大學客座教授、UCLA訪問學者等，現為清華大學歷史系教授、博士生導師。“全國百篇優秀博士學位論文”獲得者、國家社科基金重大項目“清代商稅研究及其數據庫建設”項目主持人。出版《清代漕糧海運與社會變遷》、《Customs Duties in the Qing Dynasty, ca.1644-1911》、《從國家財政到財政國家：清朝咸同年間的財政與社會》等學術著作，在《中國社會科學》、《歷史研究》、《中國史研究》、《近代史研究》、Australian Economic History Review 等刊物發表論文數十篇。
