In the world’s history of bridges, the Luding Bridge is the one working miracles. The drop of the Dadu River increases when it passes by Luding County. With mountains of about 3,000~4,000m high on both banks, and strong currents in this river section, it is difficult to go across. Although it is the “artery” linking Sichuan and Xizang, there was a long time when the only way to go across the river was using kudzu vine cables, which is very dangerous and risky, hence the expectation of the Xizang and Han dwellers on both banks for a bridge for generations. Emperor Kangxi issued an order to build the bridge in a bid to connect the Han and Xizang areas. Even though the bridge-building techniques of ancient China enjoyed a good fame worldwide, the mature bridge-building techniques such as “floating bridge” and “arch bridge” were not applicable to the complicated water condition and landform there. Steel cable bridge became the only possiblechoice. Soon afterwards, tens of thousands of craftsmen were dispatched to the Dadu River to build the bridge with the help of the Xizang villagers across the bank. Thanks to their joint efforts, the risky “artery” became a highway and the names of the builders were imprinted on every iron hoop of the bridge body. Since it was opened to traffic, the bridge has been connecting the whole southwestern area and becomes the bond between the Han and Xizang people.
The Luding Bridge was a hotly contested spot and saw the heroic history of the Chinese nation. The
ancient bridge bore witness to the sorrowful battle headed by General Shi Dakai in 1863 and the bravery and perseverance of the Red Army in 1935. After hundreds of years, modern constructions have been erected along both banks, but the tenacity and wisdom of the ancestors in architecture can still be seen through these iron chains swinging above the Dadu River.
