The historical materials on sports he has collected cover a rich variety of activities over a long period. In the past ten years or so, he has written many books and articles. Particularly during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, he achieved remarkable results in sports publicity using his vast collection. In 2007, the magazines China Archives and Beijing Archives provided special for Li Runbo’s columns to introduce the history of China sports. He also staged a thematic exhibition of historical materials to welcome the Olympic Games in Beijing Municipal Party Committee Building and at 26 Olympic Squares. He wrote a 30,000-word article on sports history published in the Beijing Olympic Times jointly organized by Xinhua News Agency and Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG), and that article was reprinted in media in 48 cities around the country. Upon invitation, he gave lectures on the history of China sports in Beijing Sport University, Wuhan University and other institutions of higher education. That same year, he also wrote the book Records and Maps of a Century Chinese Sports, a project of the Chinese Overseas Publishing House. This book, with a rich text and pictures, is collected by many units such as the National Library of China, the Central Archives, Capital Library of China, Hebei Library, China Sports Museum, and the leading newspaper People's Daily. Ten years has passed since those heady days. Now, we have invited Mr. Li Runbo to create another masterpiece Illustrated Handbook on China Sports in the Past More than 100 Years with an English version. Covering a wide range of sports and long time span, this book has been made possible by the author’s unremitting efforts. We hereby extend gratitude to him for his new contribution to study of the proud history of China sports.

Postscript
Sports illustrated Chinas racing in a century 節選
Postscript The English version of my book Illustrated Handbook on China Sports in the Past More than 100 Years is finally published with the great help of China Pictorial Publishing House. I’d like to hereby extend sincere gratitude to its encouragement and support. This book presents many rare and old photos and pictures reflecting the sports of China in the past century, enabling readers to understand the historical twists and turns of Chinese sports, the mental outlook, costumes, hair styles and movements of Chinese athletes in different eras, and also the performance changes in conventional sports events. I’m fond of collection. In the 1970s, I began to collect various kinds of books, newspapers and periodicals including historical materials on sports. After 1994, I started classified collection, with historical materials of sports as a major category. From 2006 to 2007, I wrote the Records and Maps of A Century Chinese Sports in order to welcome the coming Beijing Olympic Games. Upon an invitation of China Pictorial Publishing House, I hereby offer this English version, which introduces the history of Chinese sports through materials collected. This book is very meaningful to all sports fans all over the world, I believe. This English version adapted according to the original Chinese version, is greatly improved in terms of text and picture. First, pictures and presentations are recombined and adjusted, and original pictures reproduced by camera are replaced by new pictures reproduced through scanning with new technology. The pictures look clearer. For example, the sports pictures originally adopted in World in 1907 were reproduced by Sony digital cameras, and then scanned with a new large scanner for high definition. Second, the text is refined to make room for as many pictures as possible. Third, some precious pictures and original photos collected in the last 10 years are added, such as the exquisite old photos published in non-sports special issues such as The Eastern Miscellany and Education in late Qing Dynasty, and original photos on the sports meeting held by the first division of Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei Military Region in 1940. These are all very precious collections of cultural relic level. The final part introduces the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, further enriching the content. Since the focus of this book is on the history, in this part, it only introduces some most prominent athletes emerging in the new period, without much description about the specific sports events. The book focuses on sports in three periods. There are few pictures and records on major sports events during the Republic of China period. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the CPC as the governing Party attached great importance to development of sports undertakings. The facts prove that the CPC is very far-sighted and great. In 2008, China hosted the Beijing Olympic Games, which is the most powerful testimony that Chinese people led by the CPC, through decades of efforts, have changed the image of poor and backward old China into a new country with economic prosperity, scientific and technological progress, political democracy, and strong sports. However, due to restrictions in time and space, I only choose some representative athletes and events of sports, presenting some typical pictures and photos. There might be some mistakes or omissions in this book. Dear readers, your valuable opinions or suggestions will be highly appreciated.
