《哈珀圖解生物化學》第27版的主要目的仍然是為醫藥衛生科學專業的學生提供一本使用方便的參考書，其以簡明、生動的方式描述和解析生物化學的基礎知識。
全書分為四篇。**篇：重點介紹生命活動的執行者(即蛋白質和酶)的結構與功能。第二篇：重點闡述了細胞的各種反應如何利用或釋放能量、糖類和脂類合成與分解途徑以及這兩類分子的多種功能。第三篇：重點講述氨基酸及其多個代謝去向、蛋白質分解代謝的某些關鍵特征以及卟啉和膽色素的生物化學。第四篇：重點介紹核苷酸和核酸的結構與功能、dna復制與修復、rna合成與修飾、蛋白質合成、重組dna和基因操作技術的原理等基本內容以及關于基因表達調控的一些新知識。第五篇：重點介紹細胞通信相關內容，包括細胞膜的結構與功能、激素作用的分子基礎以及細胞信號轉導等。第六篇：本篇為專題篇，主要就營養及消化與吸收、維生素與礦物質、蛋白質在胞內的轉運與分選、糖蛋白、細胞外基質、肌肉與細胞骨架、血漿蛋白與免疫球蛋白、凝血與血栓形成、紅細胞與白細胞、非營養物質(如藥物、毒物)代謝等十個專題進行論述。

插圖：The authors and publisher are pleased to present the twenty-seventh edition of Harpe~s Illustrated BiochemisttT.First published as Review of Physiological Chemistry in 1939 and revised in 1944, it quickly gained a wide reader-ship. In 1951, the third edition appeared with Harold A. Harper, University of California at San Francisco, as au-thor. Dr. Harper remained the sole author until the ninth edition and co-authored eight subsequent editions. PeterMayes and Victor Rodwell joined as authors in the tenth edition, Daryt Granner in the twentieth, and Rob Murrayin the twenty-first edition. We now bid a fond and grateful farewell to our long-time colleague Peter Mayes, whoretired from active authorship after the previous edition. Asked by Harold Harper to review portions of the ninthedition, Peter joined as an author for the tenth through twenty-sixth editions. Peter conttibuted a unique ability todesign diagrams that integrate all key aspects of a metabolic pathway: the enzymes, intermediates, and the mecha-nisms that guide and regulate metabolic flow. Such skills, his concise and inforrmtive prose, and his collegial rela-tionships with the other authors contributed significantly to the continued success of this text. He will he ~eadymissed by his fellow authors and by readers.
