勞倫斯(1885—1930)，英國短篇小說家、詩人、散文家，20世紀(jì)英國最有成就、最有爭議的作家之一。出生于英國諾丁漢郡的伊斯特伍德村，從小與母親關(guān)系親密。1911年母親去世后，發(fā)表了第一部長篇小說《白孔雀》。從1914年起，開始靠寫作謀生。1915年完成了其最偉大的、最有代表性的作品之一《虹》，但很快被禁。1920年歷經(jīng)曲折后又發(fā)表了《虹》的姊妹篇《戀愛中的女人》。第一次世界大戰(zhàn)后，勞倫斯開始尋求一種西方工業(yè)文明所無法提供的更加令人滿意的生活方式，并開始了旅行生活，于1925年回到歐洲。1928年，他的最后一部小說《查泰萊夫人的情人》遭禁。勞倫斯在近20年的創(chuàng)作生涯中，為世人留下了10多部小說，3本游記，3卷短篇小說集，數(shù)本詩集、散文集和書信集及多幅美術(shù)作品。
