插圖：A digital communication system transfers information from a digital source to the intended receiver （also called the sink）.DEFINITION.An analog communication system transfers information from an analogsource to the sink.Strictly speaking, a digital waveform is defined as a function of time that can haveonly a discrete set of amplitude values. If the digital waveform is a binary waveform, onlytwo values are allowed. An analog waveform is a function of time that has a continuousrange of values.An electronic digital communication system usually has voltage and current waveformsthat have digital values; however, it may have analog waveforms. For example, the informa-tion from a binary source may be transmitted to the receiver by using a sine wave of 1,000 Hzto represent a binary 1 and a sine wave of 500 Hz to represent a binary 0. Here the digital sourceinformation is transmitted to the receiver by the use of analog waveforms, but the system is stillcalled a digital communication system. From this viewpoint, we see that a digital communica-tion engineer needs to know how to analyze analog circuits as well as digital circuits.

庫奇教授出生于美國北卡羅來納州達勒姆，他從小就對電子工程感興趣，高中時就是一名廣播工程師。Leon教授1963年畢業于美國杜克大學，獲學士學位，以后又在佛羅里達大學獲得電子工程碩士和博士學位。Leoi3分別于1968年和1984年擔任佛羅里達大學助理教授和教授職務。1990年到2004年，Leon教授擔任佛羅里達大學電子與計算機協會副主席。
