朱作言先生研究團隊于20 世紀80 年代初期首創農業動物基因工程研究，在1985 年發表了世界**篇魚類基因轉移研究文章，享有世界聲譽。《朱作言文集（全2冊）》從該團隊發表的200 多篇文章中，選取了100 篇編輯成冊，分上卷和下卷出版。《朱作言文集（全2冊）》的主線是基于轉基因魚理論模型的建立、轉基因鯉研制及品系選育、轉植基因功能，以及轉基因魚食用和生態安全研究。內容共包括7 個部分：**部分和第二部分建立了轉基因魚研究的完整理論模型，并以此為基礎成功研制轉“全魚”生長激素基因黃河鯉家系，系統揭示了轉植基因的整合、表達和遺傳規律。第三部分從攝食、代謝、生長、免疫和游泳行為等方面，詳細描述了轉基因黃河鯉與野生黃河鯉的生物學特性。第四部分系統評估了轉基因魚在實驗室及模擬自然環境條件下的生態學效應。第五部分系統研究了魚類生長激素對性腺發育的調控作用、育性控制技術及研制不育轉基因魚的策略。第六部分包括草魚全基因組草圖繪制、草魚病原病毒分子生物學和抗病草魚基因工程育種的基礎研究。第七部分主要以斑馬魚為模型，對魚類基因工程的生物學原理、技術拓展和應用進行了全方位的探討。為了便于廣大讀者閱讀，英文文章后面均附有中文摘要。

朱作言先生主要從事魚類遺傳發育生物學及生物技術方面的研究。本書為其多年著作的合集，分別從魚類基因轉移模型建立、魚類外源基因的整合與表達、外源基因表達的生理功能、轉基因黃河鯉的生態安全研究、魚類生殖調控與轉基因魚的育性控制研究、抗病草魚基因工程技術育種研究、魚類基因轉移育種技術展望這幾個部分進行整理。
