法國生物學家阿龍納斯在美國完成科考工作，正打算啟程回國，突接美國海軍部的邀請，乘驅逐艦前往清除海上怪物，不想驅逐艦反遭重創，阿龍納斯亦被“怪物”捕獲。原來，這是一只潛水船，船長尼摩在荒島上秘密建造了船身堅固的潛水船“鸚鵡螺號”，并能利用海水發電。尼摩船長邀請阿龍納斯乘“鸚鵡螺號”在海底旅行，從太平洋出發，途經珊瑚島、印度洋、紅海、地中海，進入大西洋，遍觀水下奇異的景象及種種罕見的海生動植物，歷經擱淺、土人圍攻、與鯊魚搏斗、冰山阻路、章魚來襲等險境，*終抵達挪威海岸。
小說情節并不復雜，出場人物亦只四位，作者巧妙地將科學知識、逼真的生活場景與詭奇而富于詩意的美妙幻想融合起來，既扣人心弦，又不能不引起讀者的無限遐思。

凡爾納，J.（Jules Verne，1828－1905）法國著名科幻小說家和冒險小說家。出身于法官家庭，一生創作66部小說和一部六卷本《偉大的旅行家和偉大的旅行史》。
凡爾納最大的成就是總名《在已知和未知世界中奇妙的漫游》的科幻及冒險小說，所寫范圍從地球到宇宙空間，從地質、地理到航海、航天，想象瑰奇，內容廣博，森羅萬象，尤其是作者能汲取最新科研成果，憑借想象創作出人類在海底、太空漫游的美好遠景，預言了20世紀潛艇、宇宙飛船的發明。
凡爾納的小說屬于男性的世界，其中充滿了不畏艱險、勇于探索的英雄氣概，是近現代以來科技發展最生動、有趣的體現。魯迅最早將凡爾納的《從地球到月球》譯成漢語，題名《月界旅行》。
